Elevating Spirits and Culture: A Recap of Taste of Black Spirits Miami Liquid Forum

In celebration of Black History Month, I had the incredible opportunity to immerse myself in culture, history, and innovation at the Taste of Black Spirits Miami Liquid Forum and Mixology event. Among many others who helped to execute this great event, Marshalle Favors, Chief Operating Officer of Taste of Black Spirits, and LAZAR FAVORS, CEO of Black Spirits Legacy and the Chief Curator of Taste of Black Spirits put together an outstanding event. The evening was set in the vibrant downtown area of Miami, FL on Biscayne Boulevard at the Hub. This gathering brought together so many enthusiasts, experts, and industry leaders who explored the world of black-owned spirits and beverages. Here’s a glimpse of my enriching experience and the remarkable brands that graced this phenomenal occasion.

A Celebration of Heritage and Innovation

This event was not only about sampling spirits; it was also a journey that took us through the stories and legacies behind each bottle. From Sorel Liqueur to Duke & Dame salted whiskey, each brand shared its unique narrative, rooted in culture, and crafted with ingenuity. As attendees, we had the privilege of delving into the rich history of these black-owned brands, gaining insights into their craftsmanship, and understanding the cultural significance infused into every sip. We learned that the Sorel Liqueur brand was the Most Awarded Liqueur of 2022. Sorel Liqueur is a handcrafted liqueur with a blend of Nigerian Ginger, Brazilian Cloves, Indonesian Cassia, Moroccan Hibiscus, and Indonesian Nutmeg. Sorel Liqueur gave me a nostalgic feeling because of its authentic taste, bringing about vivid memories of my late grandmother’s homemade Sorel wine. Sorel Liqueur also reminded me of my dad’s Jamaican roots, taking me back to the days when he would make sorrel wine in our kitchen. Also in attendance was the award-winning whiskey, Duke & Dame’s. Their story was very inspirational. This whiskey provided the tastes of caramel, vanilla, and butterscotch. The delightful aromas and flavors filled the air, transporting us to exceptional sensory experiences, and leaving an indelible mark on our palates and hearts. To our pleasant surprise, we were given the opportunity to meet and learn about Steve Love and his extensive line of products including but not limited to; Ricarda Amor Tequila, Midnight Love Wine, and Mercadier Cognac, that’s endorsed by musical artist Boosie.

Steve Love is one of the first black-owned brands out of Milwaukee to do a major distribution deal. It’s evident that Steve Love intentionally crafts his brands naturally with pristine ingredients.

In addition to the many black-owned spirits, A Taste of Black Spirits hosted a pioneer in the black spirits realm, Victor G. Harvey Sr. He has over 15 years of experience in the industry and is one of the first African American vodka owners in the United States and CEO of VG Vodka. His insight into the business of spirits provided a high level of education about the business in many facets. It was nothing short of astounding. In all the event created an atmosphere of warmth and camaraderie, connecting us not only to the exquisite spirits but also to the captivating tales and traditions that make every sip a celebration of heritage and craftsmanship.

In addition to celebrating tradition, the event was a platform for discovering different liquor brands, the latest trends, and the many innovations, then and now, of the spirits industry. Spanning from the ingenious gin from Miami’s own Ingenious Gin to the sugarcane-made Vusa Vodka, made from premium South African sugarcane. There was plenty of creativity and expertise on display. The first veteran-owned and black-owned Scotch Whiskey, Fior, was also present providing us the opportunity to experience its rich in maple and vanilla, mixed with a smoked finish whiskey. Not to mention Frisky Whiskey, one of the highest-rated premium flavored whiskey that uses pure caramel and natural vanilla to accentuate and enhance the naturally occurring whiskey notes.

Furthermore, through engaging discussions and presentations, attendees had the opportunity to stay ahead of the curve and gain valuable insights into the evolving landscape of spirits and mixology. From discussions on raising capital and smart investments to insights on crafting a compelling pitch deck or having effective cash flow management, and the nuances of business valuation. The forum provided an invaluable platform for industry leaders to share their expertise and wisdom.

Let’s not forget, the non-alcoholic brand, Simplicity Beverage Company, was in attendance, where they shared their unique iced teas and lemonade combinations. Their famous flavors were Basil Breeze, Guava Goodness, Fulfill Mint, and Island Time made with premium hibiscus. This event also introduced many of us to the first black-owned potato chips brand, Symphony Chips, whose flavors are like no one else’s. They are made with our health in mind, providing non-GMO, no MSG, all-natural, gluten-free, and vegan-friendly options. My favorite chip blend was the Balsamic gourmet seasoning. These chips originated from a chef based in Las Vegas who created a spice blend that didn’t pair well with anything else until they placed it onto potato chips. Restaurant goers loved the spices so much that it was transformed into the chips they are today. The delicious rum cake flavors, Althea Tropical Delights were also present. Althea made the most delicious rum cakes of all different flavors from chocolate pistachio, mango pepper rum, guava rum cake and so much more that are all vegan and gluten-free.

Connecting and Networking

One of the highlights of the event was the opportunity to connect with suppliers, buyers, and industry experts. From seasoned professionals to aspiring entrepreneurs, the forum provided a conducive environment for networking and forging meaningful connections. Whether it was exchanging ideas, seeking advice, or simply sharing a passion for spirits, the sense of camaraderie and collaboration was palpable throughout the event.

As the event ended, the excitement didn’t dwindle; instead, it set the stage for what was to come. Event manager, Sonya Ramsey from Dallas, TX teased the upcoming “Experience the Culture 2,” which I’m already looking forward to. The promise of further exploration, discovery, and celebration of black spirits and culture was met with eager anticipation in different cities such as Brooklyn, NY, Detroit, MI, and other cities. Sonya also did a great presentation on MurMur Rum, which was featured at this year’s South Beach Wine and Food Festival 24’. MurMur Rum has a delicious note of coconut, and it pairs nicely with pineapple juice.

A Venue of Empowerment

Owner of the Hub, Noelle Jackson, and
COO of Taste of Black Spirits, Marshalle Favors

It’s worth noting that the event was held at the Hub owned by Noelle Jackson. It is the largest black women-owned co-working space. Beyond just a venue, it served as a symbol of empowerment and inclusivity, underscoring the importance of creating spaces where diverse voices and talents can thrive.

In conclusion, the Taste of Black Spirits Miami Liquid Forum was more than just a tasting event; it was a celebration of heritage, innovation, and community. As we raise our glasses to toast to the remarkable brands and individuals behind these spirits, we also raise awareness and appreciation for the rich tapestry of black culture woven into each bottle. Here’s to the continued elevation of black spirits and the stories they tell.

Cheers!

Sorel-infused strawberry slushy

This recipe will add some Jamaican flair to your picnics and BBQs. Found this recipe from the owner himself, Jackie Summers, and Benjamin Smith, it is one that you wouldn’t want to miss out on.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 oz Sorel Liqueur
  • 1/2 oz Dark Rum
  • 1 oz Agave Syrup
  • 1/2 oz Lime Juice
  • 8 Frozen Strawberries
  • Ice
  • Mint Sprig

Sorel Strawberry Slushy Recipe

  1. In a blender, combine the Sorel, rum, agave syrup, lime juice, and frozen strawberries.
  2. Once the mixture is well blended, add a handful of ice cubes and continue blending until the desired texture is achieved.
  3. Pour the slushy into a chilled glass and garnish with a mint sprig.

Pro Tip Blending the liquid ingredients with the frozen strawberries slowly and adding ice cubes later ensures a more thorough blend and a smoother texture.
