Hair breakage and the benefits of chia seeds

The act of hair breaking, also known as scalp popping, is performed by first firmly twisting a very small segment of hair and then pulling it upward until a definite “pop” sound is heard. TikTok users have compared this method, which is intended to relieve tension or pain in the head, to popping or breaking one’s knuckles.

Hair breaking is done by holding a few strands of hair near your scalp. Then you’d wrap the hair over your fingers and pull it straight away from your head. (You can perform this hair-pulling motion on your own or with the assistance of a friend.)

Breaking one’s head hair is a traditional remedy for headaches and migraines in Mexican, Peruvian, and maybe Indian civilizations. In these countries, breaking one’s head hair was considered a cure for headaches. In these societies, the practice is seen as a reliable method for reducing the discomfort of a severe headache, particularly one that is brought on by prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

You might hear your scalp popping if you’ve used the proper amount of pressure.

What is hair breakage supposed to do?

Dr. Jan Brandes is an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Neurology at Vanderbilt University and a board member of the National Headache Foundation. Brandes had some ideas about why someone with a migraine or headache might like to break their hair.

Brandes claims that people will rip out their hair to “create another point of pain” when experiencing severe headaches.

In other words, when your hair snaps back or “breaks,” it distracts you from the pain of your headache.

This external pain may even make you think for a moment that your headache has gone away, if only because your brain is getting a different pain signal that is stronger than the pain of your headache.

Brandes says that people with headaches sometimes use a cold compress, a heating pad, or even ask someone else to put pressure on the area of their head that hurts.

Some types of headaches can be relieved by putting pressure on the head from the outside. The urge to grab and pull hair might be caused by the same thing.

How did hair breakage become viral?

TikTok user Yana Semerly was the first person to show the trick, and she did it alongside a companion who will remain nameless. Their video has amassed more than 4.9 million views and more than 820,000 likes, and the numbers are still growing!

As soon as word got out, other users of TikTok started doing the same thing, and the platform quickly became flooded with posts using the hashtag #ScalpPopping. There have been more than 6.4 million views of the hashtag.

Does breaking your hair relieve headaches?

Hair pulling, scalp popping, and hair-cracking do not help to ease headaches or migraines.

Brandes claims, “I think it would be more likely to provoke difficulties.”

Additionally, there are no clinical studies nor medical literature that point to hair pulling or breaking as a potential headache remedy.

What negative effects could hair breaking have?

In addition to being ineffective, hair breakage and scalp popping can induce unpleasant or even dangerous side effects.

“I don’t like the idea at all.” It was possible to pull out hair. “You could get folliculitis or even injure your scalp,” Brandes warns.

  • The following are some of the negative effects of hair breakage:
  • Peeling of the skin, which can result in infection
  • Your scalp may be inflamed or red.
  • Hair damage, hair loss, or hair breakage.
  • Folliculitis

The conclusion

Unfortunately, ripping out one’s hair, splitting one’s scalp, or breaking one’s hair are not helpful or healthy techniques to reduce headache pain.

While it may appeal to the instinct to apply pressure to a painful spot, this viral trend does nothing to alleviate the underlying cause of a headache—in fact, it may have dangerous side effects.

On the bright side, there are numerous more choices available to explore to obtain relief from headaches. If you suffer from frequent headaches or if you think you could have migraines, you should talk to a medical expert such as a doctor or a nurse.

History shows that the seeds have been cultivated in Mexico and Guatemala for quite some time. They were an important crop in the Aztec and Mesoamerican societies. The seeds had therapeutic uses and were an essential element in people’s diets.

Chia is now grown commercially in many countries, including the United States, Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, Argentina, and Australia. People know that these seeds are full of healthy nutrients and should be part of a healthy diet.

Health Benefits

Chia seeds are a great source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are good for your body. Here are some of these antioxidants:

  • Caffeic acid
  • Chlorogenic acid
  • Kaempferol
  • Quercetin

These nutrients help your body in many important ways.

  • Reduced the number of free radicals. Chia seeds have antioxidants that can help your body fight off free radicals. Oxidative stress and damage to cells are both caused by free radicals. Eating foods that are high in antioxidants may lower your risk of many health problems that are linked to free radicals, such as heart disease, memory loss, and some types of cancer.
  • A healthier heart Chia seeds have an antioxidant called quercetin in them. This can lower your risk of getting heart disease and other health problems. The seeds are also high in fiber, which can help lower high blood pressure and, in turn, reduce your risk of getting heart disease.
  • Enhanced Sugar Levels in the Blood Chia seeds are a high-fiber food, making them a healthy option. Studies have shown that increasing your fiber intake can help lower your chances of developing metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes by improving your blood sugar levels and decreasing your insulin resistance. Chia seed bread has been shown to have a smaller effect on blood sugar levels than regular bread, which can be beneficial for avoiding hyperglycemia.
  • Inflammation Absorption inflammation is a common immune system response, but it can lead to serious consequences. The antioxidant caffeic acid contained in chia seeds has anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammatory markers are often used to diagnose inflammatory diseases, and chia seeds may help to lower these markers when they are eaten regularly.
  • Maintaining a Healthy Weight One ounce of chia seeds contains three and a half percent of your daily fiber requirement. When you eat these seeds, their soluble fiber will absorb water and swell, making you feel full faster. Chia seeds can aid with weight maintenance by making you feel fuller with fewer calories.
  • Strengthening of Bones Magnesium and phosphorus, two of the many elements included in chia seeds, are essential for bone health. Essential for strong bones, muscles, and nerves, 18% of the RDI for calcium found in only one ounce of the seeds is a great bonus. Compared to other common plant foods, chia seeds provide more calcium per gram than most dairy products.
  • Preparation of Chia Seeds Whole chia seeds can be purchased at most supermarkets and health food stores. It’s also possible to acquire them on the internet.

Chia seeds should be kept in a cool, dry area away from light. When storing ground seeds, keep them in an airtight container or bag and keep them in a cool, dark place like the pantry or fridge.

As a result, chia seeds can be used in a wide variety of dishes. There are numerous ways to prepare them, such as:

  • Make chia pudding by combining the chia seeds with milk or fruit juice and topping it with cacao nibs or fresh fruit.
  • Creating a substitute for eggs in baked items like cakes and loaves of bread.
  • Including them in a muffin batter
  • Blending chia seeds into a gel to use in soups and smoothies.
  • Raw seeds are a healthy addition to breakfast cereals and salads.
  • Prepare chia sprouts by soaking them.
  • Fry chicken coated in a batter made from these ingredients plus almond flour and spices.
  • Making homemade energy bars with them.
